What is newborn care?

Newborn care is the pediatric medical care a baby receives during the first weeks of life, usually from hospital discharge through the first month. It includes physical exams, weight and feeding checks, jaundice screening, and guidance for parents on safe sleep and everyday baby care.

During newborn visits, your pediatrician may assess growth, feeding, hydration, jaundice, sleep, newborn behavior and overall health. Hospital records and newborn screening results may also be reviewed to determine whether additional follow-up is needed.

At Nova Pediatrics, newborn care also gives parents dedicated time to discuss feeding, safe sleep, everyday baby care and the many questions that can come with bringing a newborn home.

When should your baby see a pediatrician after birth?

After leaving the hospital Most newborns should see a pediatrician within 48 to 72 hours after leaving the hospital to check weight, feeding, jaundice and adjustment.
Feeding difficulties Concerns with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, latching or milk intake may need evaluation to help support healthy nutrition and growth.
Weight or growth concerns Newborn visits allow your pediatrician to monitor weight changes and determine whether your baby is growing as expected.

Jaundice concerns Yellowing of the skin or eyes is common in the first week of life and may require evaluation, monitoring or bilirubin testing when appropriate.
Sleep or newborn behavior Parents can discuss crying, soothing, sleep patterns, alertness and other behaviors that commonly raise questions during the newborn stage.
Everyday newborn questions Your pediatrician can provide guidance about safe sleep, diapering, bathing, umbilical cord care and other aspects of caring for your baby.
